War on Scientology

Last post I mentioned There Will Be Blood and how I was going to explain its amazingness. In an effort to be inconsistent, I'm not going to do that.

This sums up apparently what has been going on all week and what is supposed to go down today around 6:00 EST. A group of hackers called Anonymous, as well as various smaller groups have been been waging small attacks against Scientology-based websites and newsgroups.

"Anonymous" releases statements outlining "War on Scientology"

The main site, www.scientology.org, was brought down for a period of time and videos have been released promising the destruction of Scientology.

I haven't been following this too closely, but I couldn't be more pleased with the situation. What are probably 18- to 30-year old guys who spell with numbers and slashes, and care only about the Linux penguin and Counterstrike, are our freedom fighters in the war against a religion/cult based on aliens and secret levels of spirituality that are only accessible through paying more. Something is out of hand here, and I'm not totally sure what it is. I just hope this doesn't drive Tom Cruise further over the edge. He might eat his child.

Ok, so I really must ask - who does this? I mean, who has the time, energy and desire to cause more problems in the world. Granted, I want to take over the world and plan on it in the near future, but im not going to do it with a computer virus or whatever.

I guess i feel that it really is pointless. Perhaps people get off by seeing the cause and effect of threats like these, or these types of acts, but I say get a life and get a hobby. Don't get me wrong, I think there are a lot of messed up things in this world that I cannot stand, but what am i really going to do about it? I just care and put forth energy to the things i can actually control.

Now, i will say that of the people reading this, I am probably the least person in-the-know. I do not read newspapers ( sorry B) watch the news, or really care what is going on in politics. I figure I will get burned by this in a few years, but answer this - after you watch the news - what is different? you wasted an hour learning about things that already happened that you cannot change.

Anyways - back on track - I just think people who take this kind of action either have too much time on their hands, or need to do something more productive in their life, and stop causing all of us the headaches because of it.

Maybe it's just the desire to feel like you can do something--be a part of something that actually accomplishes something rather than settling to just to complain about it--and see some tangible results. The simple fact is most of us spend our lives with nothing to show for it. What do we get beyond votes that don't seem to matter, or jobs that don't make a difference in the world and daily reminders that we have no power whatsoever compared to lobbyists, corporations and hedge fund managers. Sure this attack on Scientology is petty and stupid and likely a waste of time...but at least they got to see some results. It might be worth nothing more than a psychological victory to these people, but, with recessions and wars and no pensions and $3 gas and political noise--if you ask me we haven't had enough of psychological victories lately...

I think you gentlemen are taking this a bit too seriously, so I'm gonna write this sentence again:

What are probably 18- to 30-year old guys who spell with numbers and slashes, and care only about the Linux penguin and Counterstrike, are our freedom fighters in the war against a religion/cult based on aliens and secret levels of spirituality that are only accessible through paying more.

Lolz!

B-Z, I agree. Everyone needs to feel like they accomplished something. I mean, I took the trash out today and felt pretty damn good about it ( there was a lot of it, but 1 bag-not sweat). I think next, I want to create a virus or start a religious war.

and you hush, christopher. What, do you think this is your blog or something?
